Taimoor\u2019s) words underscore the evolving nature of UN Peacekeeping where environmental catastrophes pose as great a threat as armed conflict,\u201d according to the Mission\u2019s press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incessant rainfall and consequent flooding have erased villages, submerged critical infrastructure and made agriculture \u2013 once the primary source of income and food \u2013 all but impossible, propelling hundreds of thousands to seek sanctuary in the Bentiu Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, safeguarded by the dyke system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese protective mud structures, however, demand constant surveillance and maintenance,\u201d the press release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over three years, it said, Pakistani \u2018Blue Helmets\u2019 have tirelessly worked to preserve them, a task that has become crucial for the survival of both the IDP camp\u2019s residents, the UNMISS Bentiu Field Office, as well as for the secure delivery of critical humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The durability of the dykes, which have withstood many challenges, reflects the Pakistani engineering unit\u2019s adaptability and commitment, it was pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe monitor over 80 kilometres of dykes daily. Over three years, we\u2019ve accumulated significant knowledge, ensuring the well-being of everyone here,\u201d&nbsp; said Major Saad Sultan, a Pakistani operations officer, during an inspection on the southern dyke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the challenges of working in the middle of climate disasters, compounded by food crises, conflict and the outbreak of disease, Captain Taimoor Ahmad said he remains committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I help build just one dyke, I\u2019m indirectly saving hundreds or thousands.
