RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan appeared in the Supreme Court through a video link in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) correction case.
The larger case was heard by a five-member SC headed by Chief Justice Faez Jesus and comprising Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi.
The hearing was held on the federal and provincial government’s appeal against the Supreme Court order against the NAB amendment.
Whether the hearing will be telecasted live on the SC website and YouTube channel, reported Geo News.
Quoting prison sources, arrangements for the PTI founder’s appearance in Adiala Jail have been completed this morning in order from the High Court.
Sources said the Adiala jail administration informed the PTI founder about his appearance through a video link. He added that officials from the High Court and prison authorities had examined the video link before Khan’s arrival.
Khan, who is jailed in Adiala, wants to approach the high court to present his evidence, which will allow him to defend himself through a video link.
A day earlier, his lawyers, Khawaja Haris and Intezar Panjutha, held a brief meeting with Khan in jail on the orders of the SC.
“PTI founder can present his arguments through video link if he wants,” Chief Justice Kazi Faez Isa said on Tuesday.
He said this while hearing an internal appeal filed by the federal government against the 2023 order canceling some NAB amendments. This case was also heard in the bench earlier.
The former prime minister has been on trial since August 2023 after he was convicted in the Toshakhana case.
After his arrest, the PTI founder was convicted in several cases, including espionage and illegal marriage, and remains in custody despite being granted bail in several cases.
If the parties decide to hold a live hearing, it will be Khan’s first virtual public appearance in 10 months.
According to the Adiala Jail authorities, Khan’s video link was scheduled as per the apex court order. However, the PTI founder can choose to appear before the bench or not. Authorities said they would confirm Khan’s appearance in court.
In September 2023, three DK members approved a petition from former prime minister Khan challenging changes to the country’s accountability laws during the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice Kazi Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, held more than 50 hearings and most of them by 2-1 decision revived cases against government officials that had been closed after the amendment. .
The Supreme Court has ordered the reinstatement of lawsuits worth more than $500 million against political leaders that include several political parties and social workers, saying the amendment is null and void.
The decision has far-reaching implications, as the annulment of the amendment will once again bring cases against some of the country’s political giants to the accountability court.
These include Toshakhana references related to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, former prime minister Shahid Khan Abbasi and LNG references. rent-seeking power against former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.
Following this decision, the federal government filed an appeal under Section 5 of the SC Act against the high court’s order.
