Chief of the Army Staff General Asim Munir spoke as the chief guest during a preparatory meeting that served as a prelude to the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting, scheduled for 30th -31st August.
Pakistan and Japan co-hosted the event, focusing on the theme of ensuring the Safety and Security of Peacekeepers. The meeting saw participation from delegates representing various nations, high-ranking UN officials, and members of the diplomatic community based in Islamabad.
General Asim Munir, the Chief of the Army Staff, has called upon the United Nations to enhance the effectiveness of Peacekeeping Missions in tackling intricate threats, all while ensuring the safety and security of the Peacekeepers.
During his address, the army chief praised the United Nations for its role in upholding global peace and underscored the escalating challenges and unprecedented threats confronting Peacekeepers. The army chief additionally emphasized Pakistan’s aspiration to foster a region characterized by peace, where transit, trade and investment could bring prosperity to all nations across South, West, and Central Asia. He also appealed to UN Secretary-General and Security Council for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute, in line with Security Council Resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmir people.
Addressing the attendees, Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani reminisced about Pakistan’s enduring dedication to UN peacekeeping, spanning more than six decades. He highlighted this commitment as a concrete demonstration of Pakistan’s contribution to global peace and security.
He expressed his heartfelt tribute to the courageous individuals, both men and women, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the honorable mission of peacekeeping, which included 171 Pakistanis.
