
CAIRO, Egypt (AFP): A devastating road accident on Egypt’s Cairo-Alexandria motorway has resulted in the loss of at least 35 lives and left dozens injured, as reported by state media.
This tragic incident, which unfolded on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natrun, led to the untimely demise of 35 individuals, with at least 18 of them tragically succumbing to the blaze, as detailed by Al-Ahram news website. Additionally, it was reported that at least 53 people sustained injuries.
Images circulating on social media portrayed a scene of chaos, with an overturned lorry obstructing the fast lane amidst charred tarmac. In close proximity, a bus and a minibus, both extensively damaged by fire, were visible, alongside several cars, some still engulfed in flames.
The horrifying accident drew crowds of onlookers, their gaze fixed upon the devastating crash site, while queues of vehicles extended along the road, enveloped in thick black smoke rising into the air.
Tragically, official figures reveal that in 2021, a staggering 7,000 lives were lost in road accidents in Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous nation.
