Islamabad : The Senate of Pakistan issued a Production Order for Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary, who has been in jail since May 11, 2023. The letter, signed by the Secretary Senate, directed the Provincial government and Ministry of Interior to produce Senator Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhary on Saturday, March 9, 2024, for the Presidential election vote. This decision comes as the Speaker National Assembly called for a Joint Session for the Presidential Election on March 9, 2024, at the National Assembly.
Earlier, during a Senate session, Senator Ali Zafar highlighted the upcoming Presidential elections on March 9, 2024, emphasizing the necessity for a Production Order to enable Senator Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhary to exercise his legal right to vote. Senator Aon Abbas Buppi proposed a written note for the issuance of Production Orders, which was then circulated among the present members. It was noted that members of the treasury benches also supported and signed the requisition for the Production Order. The Deputy Chairman of the Senate Mirza Muhammad Afridi approved the request, instructing the Secretary to issue the Production Order accordingly.
Regrettably, the Government of Punjab did not comply with the directive of the Upper House and failed to produce Senator Ejaz Chaudhary in Parliament for his voting rights. This action resulted in a denial of a member’s right in the Upper House to vote for the highest office of the state. Additionally, it raises concerns about the credibility of Parliament when government officials do not adhere to the directives of this esteemed institution.
