Islamabad :- A Pakistan development organisation is celebrating the inaugural World Day of Assistive Technology on June 4 by calling for improved access to the innovative technology that transforms the lives of people with disabilities.
Sightsavers Pakistan invites government, organizations, and individuals to join them in marking the first ever day dedicated to formally recognising the transformative impact of assistive devices on millions of lives worldwide.
Sightsavers want to raise awareness of the crucial role assistive technology plays in empowering individuals with disabilities and the urgent need to improve access to it as a fundamental human right.
Assistive technology encompasses a wide range of products such as wheelchairs, eyeglasses, hearing aids, artificial limbs, digital devices, and their related systems and services. These tools enable individuals to move, communicate, and see better, empowering them to live more independently and enhancing their quality of life.
Munazza Gillani, Director Pakistan and Middle East said “Sightsavers has been at the forefront of providing essential services and advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. This first-ever World Day of Assistive Technology is a milestone in our journey towards inclusivity and equality.
“At Sightsavers, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to live a full and independent life and assistive technologies help persons with disabilities to participate equally in society. Assistive technology is not just a tool; it’s a lifeline for many, and we are dedicated to making these essential devices available to those in need”.
She added “As part of our initiatives, we invest significantly in enhancing access to assistive technology. We provide eyeglasses, low vision devices and wheelchairs to underprivileged individuals to support those with impairments. Many affected individuals in rural areas often lack access to trained eye care professionals and cannot afford assistive devices. In addition to addressing vision impairment, Sightsavers is committed to improving mobility and accessibility for people with disabilities. We provide wheelchairs and other assistive devices and develop disability-friendly infrastructure to ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical limitations, can lead a fulfilling life”.
Amna Ali, a recipient of Sightsavers’ services, shared her transformative experience: “Receiving a wheelchair changed my life. Before, going to school and the park was very challenging. My brother had to carry me on his shoulder to school and back. Now, I can go to school easily on my wheelchair. I can read, work, and participate in all activities without any hindrance.”
Sightsavers Pakistan, is part of a global international development agency working in 33 countries with a mission to eliminate avoidable blindness and promoting rights of people with disabilities. We aims to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to see clearly and live independently. By raising awareness and advocating for improved access to assistive technology, they aim to ensure that no one is left behind.
