Engro has pledged its support for flood-resilient housing solutions through a partnership with the Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) and Indus Valley School (IVS)

Engro Polymer and Chemicals spearheaded the collaborative project with IVS to investigate the use of PVC in rehabilitation efforts. Extensive research by IVS students led to a shelter design using regional materials like sun-dried brick, bamboo, recyclable UPVC sheets and concrete blocks. These materials are not only suited to the local climate but also adaptable to floating, submerging, transforming or blocking in response to floods, ensuring safety.

This collaboration illustrates how academia and industry can join forces to address real-world challenges using local materials and the expertise of the next generation of designers and architects. Additionally, Engro Foundation, the social investment arm of Engro Corporation, partnered with SRSO to construct 146 climate-resilient residential units in two severely affected villages in District Kambar Shahdadkot. These units, elevated three feet above ground level, were built using readily available materials and recyclable UPVC sheets, with thatched roofs for temperature regulation.

What sets this initiative apart is its strong community mobilization focus, empowering local communities to participate in and take ownership of construction activities. Favad Soomro, Head of Engro Foundation, emphasized Engro’s commitment to serving underprivileged communities in Pakistan through strategic investments in areas such as environment, education, health, and livelihoods.

Muhammad Idrees, Chief Commercial Officer of Engro Polymer & Chemicals, highlighted the company’s goal of promoting modern PVC materials that are environmentally friendly and resilient in the face of tough conditions, including flash floods. PVC is water and termite-proof, fire-retardant, lightweight, and requires minimal maintenance. It offers superior longevity and can withstand various climatic conditions.

These projects demonstrate the power of knowledge, innovation, and community engagement in creating sustainable solutions to pressing challenges, particularly in the face of escalating climate-related disasters. Such collaborations offer hope to vulnerable communities seeking safety, dignity, and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.
