Mexico : A Pakistani Parliamentary delegation, including Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan Syed Mir Ghulam Mustafa Shah, MNA Ms. Nuzhat Sadiq, Senator Naseema Ehsan, Senator Zamir Hussain Ghumro, and Senator Rana Mahmood ul Hassan, participated in the IPU Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians 2025 in Mexico City, Mexico, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The Pakistani delegation actively contributed to discussions on enhancing women’s participation in politics, addressing gender-based challenges, and fostering inclusive policymaking.
They reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to gender inclusivity and equal rights, emphasizing that the Constitution of Pakistan
guarantees the protection and promotion of women’s rights. It was highlighted that Pakistan has taken significant steps to empower women in politics, including reserved seats in the National and Provincial Assemblies, ensuring their active role in #legislation and #governance.
The delegation underscored Pakistan’s advancements in women’s leadership, citing Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto’s historic role as the first female Prime Minister of the Muslim world. Her leadership was recognized as a symbol of Pakistan’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. Additionally, the delegation noted that Punjab Chief Minister Ms. Maryam Nawaz Sharif currently leads the largest province of Pakistan, further demonstrating the growing role of women in key leadership positions.
The discussion emphasized that, despite challenges, Pakistan remains committed to strengthening women’s roles in governance through policy reforms and institutional support.
During the conference, the Pakistani delegation held bilateral meetings with Parliamentarians from various countries, exchanging insights on gender-focused legislative initiatives and exploring strategies for international collaboration.
Pakistan’s efforts in promoting women’s rights and gender equality were widely appreciated by participants, reinforcing its position as a strong advocate for inclusive governance on the global stage.
